The 49er is the ultimate high performance skiff, a doublehanded, twin trapeze Olympic class, designed by Julian Bethwaite. The ultra light hull requires skilled crew-work, but genuine skiff power-to-weight ratio makes for seamless transition from displacement sailing to planing. It achieves phenominal downwind speed thanks to a large asymmetric spinnaker, with gybing simplified by a high boom, inverted kicker and self tacking jib. The solid wings provide a strong platform for the two crew as they stand horizontally at the back of the wing, hooked into the toestraps going the same speed as the wind.
